POP-UP Theater - Cracow, Poland
FDomes transformed a geodesic dome into a 300 m² temporary theatre on the campus of the Cracow University of Economics. Created for the POP-UP Theater (Teatr POP-UP) project, the space hosted productions directed by artists including Krystian Lupa and Olivier Frijic.

A Temporary Stage Inspired by Pop-Up Culture
Autumn could never be boring! Our crew headed to Cracow, Poland, to work on a special project called POP-UP Theater (originally Teatr POP-UP), staging plays directed by the likes of Krystian Lupa and Olivier Frijic. A unique dome structure was transformed into a 300 m² theatre, serving as a temporary modern stage on the campus of the Cracow University of Economics. The project's name alluded to the concept of pop-up stores – unique retail spaces, particularly popular in the UK and US, that appear in unexpected places as quickly as they vanish, offering limited-edition products for a short period only. Our special-edition theatre also popped up out of nowhere and was no less extraordinary.
A Geodesic Structure for a New Kind of Theatre
Inspired by the work of the famous American architect and visionary Buckminster Fuller, the Freedome 300 spherical tent was ideally suited to its purpose. It not only provided a unique stage setting but also served as a metaphor for all things artistic, cultural and perhaps even political. The innovative structure was built just in time for the 250th anniversary of the first public theatre in Poland and the 25th anniversary of the country's political transformation, sparking debate about traditional models of cultural institutions and a new wave of alternatives. Customised to the needs of its performers, the immersive theatre included Premium Floor and heating systems, LED lighting, double doors and vinyl branding. With its highly durable steel frame, high-quality PVC membrane and ultra-modern design, it formed a contemporary mobile alternative to the traditional British Globe Theatre.
